Hormone Replacement

Therapy

Bioidentical hormones are an alternative to traditional hormone replacement therapy for both men and women

Dr Kathryn is trained on bio-identical hormone replacement by the Marion Gluck Training Academy – the only dedicated academy of it’s kind in the UK.

Dr Kathryn will send your blood test to TDL lab in central London for analysis.

What are bioidentical hormones?

Hormones are messengers that send signals to organs and systems to control almost every task your body performs, including sex and brain function, growth, and food breakdown. As we age, hormonal imbalances become more noticeable and can affect our daily lives. Bioidentical hormones are a man-made version almost identical to those that our body naturally produces. Because they are so similar, they are easier to metabolise and less likely to cause a reaction.

Bioidentical hormones are extracted from soy and yams and are available in many different forms including pills, patches, creams, gels, shots, and implants. Estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, Vitamin D and DHEA are all available as bioidentical hormones.

You can feel confident with your bioidentical hormone treatment because Dr Kathryn will tailor it exactly to treat your hormonal imbalance.

Bioidenticals can be used to improve symptoms of:

  • PMT
  • Menopause
  • Perimenopause
  • Andropause (the “male menopause”)
  • Hot flushes and night sweats
  • Irritability
  •
Memory Loss

  • Loss of Libido

  • Osteoporosis
  •
Sleeping difficulties
  •
Anxiety

What do different hormones do?

Estrogen – deals with the heart, blood pressure, bones, sleep, hair, skin and vaginal health. Key in women’s health and overall well-being.

Progesterone – controls anxiety and mood swings, sleep. A mood enhancer that is one of few natural antidepressants.

Testosterone – impacts vitality, ambition, red blood cell production, bone density, weight control, energy and libido. An anabolic steroid, also useful for women to strengthen muscles and bone density.

Vitamin D – controls mood, immunity, bone density and impacts auto-immune conditions. Because the majority of Vitamin  comes from the sun, there are often low levels in people in Northern Europe.

DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) – impacts vitality, energy, motivation and libido. The most prolific hormone in the body that converts into testosterone and oestrogen as required by the body.

Men

Experiencing a period of low energy, self esteem and decreased sex drive, amongst other symptoms, in their late 40s and 50s is common amongst men. Sometimes this is a result of low hormone levels. Testosterone levels decrease yearly (at less than 2%) from around the age of 30.

Here’s what some of our patients have said…

Dr Kathryn did a simple blood test with results the next day before advising me on treatment for hormone and vitamin deficiencies. I feel so much better and have far more energy!

Salli

Dr. Kathryn is amazing!!! I went to her in August 2019 on my knees. I had no energy whatsoever and found day to day life a challenge, basically feeling generally flat. At 50 I wasn’t sure if it was the start of menopause or something else as my periods were as regular as always.

Dr Kathryn gave me a blood test that would test my hormone levels and was back in touch within 24 hours with the results and a very thorough explanation. She prescribed me with the medication and vitamins within 48 hours and a couple of weeks later I started to feel so much better and within a month the best I’ve felt in a very long time. A second blood test results confirmed the great change in my levels.

Ten months along and I still have extreme amounts of energy and a hell of a lot more patience! I can’t recommend Dr Kathryn and this treatment enough!

Patient Review

After being on HRT patches from my GP for 3 years I was unable to continue with them due to a manufacturing and supply problem. My menopause symptoms returned with a vengeance and left me feeling really low, tired and agitated. I decided to contact Dr Kathryn who I knew was very passionate about helping women optimise their health and well-being.

Following a consultation I had a full blood test profile and detailed analysis of what was going on with my hormones. I was prescribed a bespoke combination of medication and am now into my 3rd week of treatment. My night sweats have completely gone and I feel totally energised. I feel the best I’ve felt for a very long time. Certainly better than when I was using the patches.

Dr Kathryn totally understood how I was feeling and has made me feel human again. I would highly recommend her and the treatment regimen.

Patient Review

After an extremely stressful 12 months and feeling very low and exhausted, I went to Dr Kathryn for fillers as a pick-me-up. After some general conversation she convinced me that my money would be better spent on hormone blood tests instead. Results were returned the next morning; I was immediately put on additional progesterone, testosterone and vitamin D. The deficiency had resulted in immense fatigue, anxiety, sleeplessness, tearfulness and physical aches and pains. I cannot begin to convey how grateful I am that Dr Kathryn convinced me to have these tests/treatment – I feel a thousand percent better!

Michele

When I was 38 years old I was showing signs of early menopause and after several visits to my GP and a few years later, I was told I was too young to be going through the menopause. During this time, I was feeling very low, highly emotional and always extremely tired. At this point, I thought there was nothing that could be done until a friend recommended me to Dr Kathryn.

I can honestly say that she has changed my life with only a simple blood test! When the results came back, she was able to give me the right medication to balance my hormones. I am now taking Sandrena gel, testosterone gel and progesterone tablets at night and vitamin D tablets daily. Hand on my heart, I feel so much happier, I am sleeping a lot better and the night sweats aren’t keeping me up at night. I am also less emotional and on the whole a lot more relaxed and happier about everything.

My husband and children have seen a real difference and we cannot thank Dr Kathryn enough.

Maria (Age 43)

I’ve been seeing Dr Kathryn for testosterone/hormone replacement therapy to feel and look the best I can for my age. Her wealth of knowledge and the care she has for me as an individual is more than enough to know I’m in the right hands. I’ve been feeling mentally, physically, and emotionally better as a result.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between synthetic and bioidentical hormones?

Synthetic hormones are not created structurally the same as hormones the body naturally produces, which can lead to uncomfortable side effects. They don’t tend to offer the same level of effectiveness at a molecular level.

Bioidentical hormones mimic those that the body naturally produces, making them effective on more biological pathways at all levels. There are generally less side effects as they are structurally an exact replica of the naturally produced hormones. Bioidentical hormones can be tailored exactly to you, unlike synthetic hormones which are only available in the doses that pharmaceutical companies offer.

Are bioidentical hormones safe?

A wide range of research shows that bioidentical hormone therapy has little in common with the side effects of synthetic hormones, and does not have the same risk of breast cancer, heart attack, blood clots and strokes. You can discuss any concerns you may have with Dr Kathryn in confidence.

What is involved in the hormone test?
Dr Kathryn will test you for hormone levels before prescribing your treatment plan to ensure you get a prescription that’s tailored to you. Hormone levels are measured via a blood test.

How long do I stay on bioidentical hormones?

Depending your age, lifestyle and individual circumstances, treatment time can differ between patients. Dr Kathryn will discuss your estimated treatment time with you at the diagnosis and prescription stage.

How soon will I notice changes?

Many patients notice changes in their symptoms after 3 weeks. You should allow 8 weeks to start seeing a difference. You will have a review with Dr Kathryn at this time to assess your needs and adjust your prescription if necessary.

Are there any side effects of bioidentical hormones?

Some patients do experience side effects with bioidentical hormones. These can include weight gain, headaches, indigestion, acne and tiredness. Women can also experience spotting, cramping and breast tenderness. Side effects often improve as your body gets used to the new hormone levels. If you use a patch, cream or gel to take your bioidenticals, your skin may itch or redden in the area you apply it.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed, get in touch with Dr Kathryn to discuss Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy and book your consultation.
