Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Vitamin B12 injection therapy at Real You Clinic

What is Vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 is an essential component for reactions related to DNA and cell metabolism. If you have low vitamin B12 levels this can have serious consequences on your health.

Pregnant women who are strict vegans must take care to avoid Vitamin B12 deficiency as it can pass to the baby.

How many of us are B12 deficient?

In the UK, 16% of people aged less than 60 years old are Vitamin B12 deficient, which increases to 20% of people aged over 60.

What causes B12 deficiency?

  • Impaired digestions due to intestinal malabsorption
  • Parasites
  • Pernicious anaemia
  • Malnutrition
  • Strict Vegan diet
  • Alcohol
  • Anti-acid medication (proton pump inhibitors such as lansoprazole)
  • Metformin medication

How will I feel if I am deficient?

How you may feel if you suffer from Vitamin B12 deficiency really depends on how low your levels are, but you may experience some of the following symptoms…

  • Fatigue & tiredness
  • Heart problems
  • Inflamed tongue
  • Ulcers on tongue
  • Altered taste
  • Anaemia
  • Poor coordination
  • Weakness and muscle stiffness
  • Pins and needles in hands and feet
  • Poor memory and concentration
  • Infertility
  • Depression

How do I get tested?

Dr Kathryn will complete a blood test in order to determine your B12 levels. Your blood test will cost between £50 – £135. Dr Kathryn uses 2 labs for test analysis in London, and the cost varies dependent on the lab.

What is the treatment for B12 deficiency?

B12 injections are an effective treatment for Vitamin B12 deficiency. These cost £35 per injection, which are repeated every 1 to 2 weeks until your symptoms resolve and blood test results show improvement. Injections are done in the muscle of your arm or buttock.

Once your levels have improved, a B12 oral supplement may be suitable as an ongoing option.

Dr Kathryn will discuss your treatment plan in depth with you at your consultation.
